But the Hartford man, who was not identified because he could be a witness in the case, says he traded the weapon for a $5 piece of crack, according to this report in the Hartford Courant, published on Saturday, Aug. 3.
Jennifer Farber Dulos, 50, and her estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, were embroiled in a contentious divorce when Jennifer Dulos disappeared on Friday, May 24 after failing to show up to several meetings with friends in New Canaan, where she lived. Her vehicle was found abandoned near a park in town the same day.
Fotis Dulos, 51, who is free on $500,000 bail, was arrested along with his girlfriend, Michelle Troconis. Both were charged with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and hindering prosecution, after a cell phone track allowed investigators to link the movements of the husband as he made at least 30 stops to dump garbage bags in dumpsters and garbage cans, authorities said.
Inside those bags were items that contained the blood of Jennifer Dulos, said police.
The man who has come forward saying he found the knife and blue-and-white striped pillow said he recovered the items in a garbage can near those dumpsters on Albany Avenue where the other evidence was discovered.
“I put my hand in the garbage can, I picked up the bloody thing, the bloody pillow and I looked underneath and there was a knife under there,” the man told the Courant after his release from prison earlier this week on misdemeanor charges of failure to appear and trespassing. “It was about a quart of blood on the pillow, all over the pillow. I tell you, whoever got hurt got hurt real bad.”
The man said he returned the pillow into the garbage can where he found it, but traded the knife to a dealer identified only as “Fudge" for the $5 piece of crack.
“I put the knife in my pocket for some reason. I was thinking stupid," he told the Courant. "I was on that crack. I wanted a hit so bad I went looking for somebody to sell me some crack."
The man was reportedly captured on surveillance video removing the items from the vestibule the weekend after Jennifer Dulos disappeared, the Courant reported.

Earlier this week, a report stated that police found a blood-stained Vineyard Vines T-shirt that she was believed to be wearing on the day she vanished.
According to that report in the Courant, police found the shirt, along with a bra, two mops and some sponges with blood on them in a garbage can on Albany Avenue in Hartford, where all the other items were also found.
Dulos, a native of Turkey who grew up in Athens, Greece, was the founder and CEO of Fore Group Inc., a builder of luxury homes. He and Jennifer Dulos met as students at Brown University.
The couple has five children, ages 8 to 13, including two sets of twins, who have been staying with their grandmother in Manhattan. Fotis Dulos is now not allowed contact with the children.
